Natural stone underfoot
Quarried stone has been used in buildings for thousands of years. Each piece carries natural variation. Travertine is a form of limestone, even when older trade language calls it “travertine marble.”
What makes the difference
A commercial stone name can group rocks that are geologically different. Limestone and travertine are sensitive to mild acids, and varieties differ in absorption. Travertine’s filled voids may need maintenance over time.
What changes the price
Ask what the quote includes for selection, finish, thickness, filling, layout and installation. Similar color or a shared trade name does not establish the same source, grade or maintenance behavior.
Origin & identity
Quarry, processing country and distributor location should be recorded separately. Do not place a product on an origin map from its name alone.
What to compare
- Documented stone identity, source and lot
- Finish and approval for the intended area
- Thickness, size tolerance and edge treatment
- Filling or reinforcement and sample range
- Cleaning, sealing and installation instructions
