What a cabinet front is made of
Wood panels extend timber into engineered materials: plywood uses bonded layers, particleboard uses small particles, and MDF uses fibers. Decorative surfaces then give a panel its color and texture.
What makes the difference
A solid-wood or veneer face is different from a wood-look laminate. Matte and gloss describe appearance, not the substrate. REHAU, for example, specifies an MDF core for RAUVISIO crystal and a particleboard core for its ingrain boards; these are manufacturer examples, not specifications for this catalog.
What changes the price
Compare the complete build: face material, substrate grade, edge work, hardware, custom sizes and installation. Plywood, MDF and particleboard each have grades and suitable uses; the material name alone cannot rank the finished cabinet.
Origin & identity
A European style, wood-color name or program label does not establish the factory or timber origin. Confirm each with the actual supplier.
What to compare
- Door face, door core and cabinet box separately
- Panel thickness and documented moisture grade
- Edge sealing and panel balancing
- Hinges, drawer hardware and load ratings
- Finish care, repair and applicable emissions documentation
