Why 15 lb/sq ft decides it
The number that decides whether bonding is enough: veneer ADHERED with mortar alone is accepted up to about 15 lb per square foot (common practice / IRC for adhered masonry veneer). A 3 cm slab weighs 16 to 17 lb/sq ft and EXCEEDS that limit, so it needs mechanical support: a ledger angle at the base, anchors or clips. A 2 cm slab is around 11 lb/sq ft and can be bonded. It is the difference between a wall that lasts and one that comes down on its own in two years.
Check before you build
- The 3 cm stone weighs 16.5 lb/sq ft, over the 15 lb/sq ft limit for veneer bonded with thinset alone. Thinset PLUS mechanical support: a steel ledger angle at the base carrying the first course, and anchors or clips on the upper pieces fastened into studs or blocking.
- Direct-vent gas: A sealed chamber takes outside air in and sends exhaust out through the same duct. The most widely accepted. Minimum wall depth 18″.
- It needs a hole in the exterior wall and the duct path INSIDE the framing: the stud depth has to accommodate it.
- Depth: the built wall gives 5.2″ (stud 3.5 + board 0.5 + stone 1.2) and the appliance needs 18″. You are 13″ short: bring the wall forward as a projecting chase, or recess the appliance into the existing wall cavity behind it. Do not try to fit it inside the stud bay.
- Every appliance manual gives the FRAMING OPENING and the CLEARANCES TO COMBUSTIBLES, including the minimum clear height above the opening before a wood mantel. Those numbers come from the appliance manufacturer, not from here. This tool reserves the opening you enter and draws the framing around it.
